Mexico 2-1 North Korea: Hernandez Strikes Again

Javier Hernandez scored his fourth goal in three games as Mexico won at home.

Playing a their third preparation game against North Korea at the Territorio Santos Modelo, Mexico won 2-1 Wednesday night with goals from Cuauhtémoc Blanco and Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez.  

Mexico won in their first international friendly on Mexican soil as well as the first national team match at the new TSM as manager Javier Aguirre continued his observation of World Cup hopefuls.

First Half

Jonathan Dos Santos tried to feed the ball in the third minute for Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez, but the ball goes long for anyone on the Mexican team to reach it.  

North Korea’s Chol Hyok An took Jonny Magallon and shoots wide of Mexico’s goal in the fifth minute.  

Dos Santos took on the North Korean defense in the seventh minute and took a shot, but his attempt went just wide of goal.  

In the 24th minute Blanco started the play, passing the ball to Braulio Luna who found Hernandez. ‘Chicharito’ went in the box and tried to shoot, but the ball went wide of goal.  

Torres Nilo sent in a shot to Blanco who tried to head it in, but the ball went straight to Ri Myong Guk’s hands. The North Korean goalkeeper has some trouble controlling the ball but was able to prevent a Mexican goal.  

Blanco took a free kick in the 31st minute, sending the ball past the wall. The ball hit the left post for one of Mexico’s closest opportunities of the game.  

Mun In Guk passde the ball to An Chol Hyok in the 35th minute, but the ball ended up going too long for the player and when he reached it and took a shot it went over the cross bar into the stands.

Second Half

In the 50th minute ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez earned a free kick outside of North Korea’s box. Blanco took the free kick and scored, sending it past Ri Myong Guk’s outstretched hands to give Mexico the lone goal advantage.  

North Korea equalized in the 57th minute as Kum-Chol Choe sent in a long left footed shot from outside the box. Guillermo Ochoa picked the ball as going straight into his hands, but a bounce ruined his plans and saw him unable to control the ball as it bounced past him for the equalizer.    

In the 63rd minute North Korea’s Nam Song Col broke away in a free kick and tried to surprise Ochoa with a shot, but the Mexican goalkeeper blocked the ball.

Mexico added a second goal in the 68th minute. Jonny Magallon set up the ball for Hernandez at the edge of the North Korean box. After receiving the ball, ‘Chicharito’ dribbled through and slotted in Mexico’s second goal of the night past Ri Myong Guk.
