Barcelona star Lionel Messi will not play in today's friendly between Catalunya and Argentina at the Camp Nou, according to Sport.
The newly crowned FIFA World Player of the Year and Ballon d'Or winner met with Diego Maradona and Barca physical therapist Juanjo Brau and made the decision to not risk the Argentine wizard in tonight's match against Johan Cruyff's squad, allowing Messi to begin his winter vacation.
Messi has still not completely recovered from his grade II ankle sprain that kept him out of the Barcelona derbi against Espanyol in La Liga and limited him in the first match against Atlante in the Club World Cup.
Messi's absence from the national team will cost the Albicelestes €140,000 as (according to Argentinean publication Ole), without La Pulga in the side, ticket revenues are projected to drop from €560,000 to €420,000.
