Defence Minister Wants Italy - Brazil Called Off

Italy's defence minister, Ignazio La Russa, has reignited the proposal that the friendly between Italy and Brazil be cancelled.

Marcello Lippi and Alessandro Del Piero aren't working together at the moment, as Alex has been left out by Lippi once again.
Due to the political situation involving Cesare Battisti, a terrorist wanted by the Italian government, who is seeking refuge in Brazil, the friendly match between the two nations may be cancelled.

After the initial proposal that the match should not take place, yesterday, it was announced by Undersecretary to the Presidency of the Council that the match would go ahead as planned.

However, on Thursday, the Italian defence minister stated that he believes the match should be stopped.

"If it was a World Cup match, then it would be right [that] politics do not enter into it," claimed Ignazio La Russa, "However, this is a friendly match and right now I cannot find reasons to be friends with Brazil, which has left a terrorist and murderer in Cesare Battisti at large. The friendly match should be stopped."

Meanwhile, World Cup 1982 winner Paolo Rossi disagrees and believes the match should continue.

"Football can be a vehicle for people to make themselves heard and that needs to be exploited in the best way," said the former Juventus striker. "The friendly between Italy and Brazil should not be thrown out the window.

Senator Giulio Andreotti is also certain that the match should be allowed to go ahead.

"We must put pressure on Brazil. I think there are legal standards which must be respected," he suggested. "However, in Italy, we have always kept sport and politics separate. It would be best to continue that way."

The match is scheduled to take place on February 10 at the Emirates Stadium in London.
