Maradona Jr Receives World Cup Call-Up
Diego Sinagra, the son of football legend Diego Armanda Maradona, has spoken of his delight after being called up by Italy for the Beach Soccer World Cup.
Maradona Jr was born in 1986 as a result of an affair between Maradona Sr and
a young Neapolitan woman. The 21-year-old has never had a relationship with his
father though, and the pair only met for the first time five years ago during a
golf tournament in Naples.
Sinagra played for Serie D side Venafro last season, however he is now playing for the Italy Beach Soccer team, and he has been called up for the 2008 Beach Soccer World Cup that begins on Thursday.
"It is a great satisfaction” Maradona Jr told the Gazzetta dello Sport.
“The World Cup was one of my goals. My future? Right now I am thinking of beach soccer, but after the World Cup, or at the latest next year I will return to playing football again, and I hope it will be at a professional level.
“Unfortunately though there are still many prejudices associated with me having my surname.”
Italy have been drawn in Group B of the Beach Soccer World Cup, along with Portugal, El Salvador and the Solomon Islands.
