FC Twente defender Douglas has been called up to the Netherlands squad.
The 24-year-old has been handed a place in Louis van Gaal's selection for the Oranje's upcoming World Cup qualifiers with Andorra and Romania after impressing in the Eredivisie so far this season.
The Brazilian-born defender, who was heavily linked with Premier League duo Newcastle United and Fulham over the summer, could make his debut for his adopted nation on Friday when they take on European minnows Andorra in a bid to maintain their 100 per cent record in qualification for Brazil 2014.
He had previously stated he would prefer to represent his birth nation at international level, but after conceding that the opportunity may never arise, he began the process of acquiring Dutch citizenship and was granted a passport in November of last year.
Given that Van Gaal only named 20 players in his squad last Friday, Douglas' inclusion does not come at the expense of another player.
