Heerenveen coach Marco van Basten has expressed his disappointment at his team’s loss to NEC in their opening league match of the season, and believes new signings are needed for the club to progress.
Van Basten, taking charge of the side for the first time in the Eredivisie, saw them suffer a 2-0 defeat on Sunday.
The former international attacker admitted that the result was not the ideal start to his side’s campaign but insisted that injuries and a lack of experience in his starting XI played a large part in the result.
“Not a good start,” the former Ajax and Netherlands coach told NU Sport. “We have a young and inexperienced squad. Sometimes that is a good thing, sometimes it’s bad.”
He continued: “I'd like to bring in some reinforcements, but it will not be easy to make that happen."
Heerenveen face Feyenoord in Rotterdam next Saturday before they face Norwegian side Molde in the Europa League qualifying play-offs.
