Sweden striker John Guidetti has expressed his disappointment after picking up a virus that will deny him the opportunity to represent his country at Euro 2012.
The Manchester City-owned forward has had a terrific season on loan at Feyenoord, netting 20 goals in the Eredivisie, and was considered a shoo-in for selection after impressing on his international debut against Croatia in February.
However, the 20-year-old has been struggling with illness in recent weeks and his place in the squad has been taken by Werder Bremen front man Markus Rosenberg.
"I'm terribly disappointed," Guidetti told reporters on Monday. "I've had a fantastic season with Feyenoord and was given the chance to make my debut for the national team [against Croatia].
"The Euros were naturally the main goal and it doesn't feel great to not get the chance. But I realise that it was not going to be possible and I also don't want to take any chances.
"At the same time I am not the type of person that spends time worrying about these things; I rather look ahead.
"I will now make sure that I will get completely healthy and then get started with my training so I can be in good shape when the next season starts in August."
Guidetti, who has yet to make a senior appearance for City, came through the English club's youth team after joining from Brommapojkarna in 2008, just before his 16th birthday.
