KNVB Beker Tuesday Round-Up: Feyenoord Eliminate AZ, Easy Win For Sparta
It was a good day for Rotterdam, as both Feyenoord and Sparta progressed to the next round...
Tuesday
Baronie 0-5 Sparta
Feyenoord 1-0 AZ
Baronie 0-5 Sparta
Amateur side Baronie were unable to cause Sparta any problems and had to settle for a heavy loss. The Rotterdam side picked up a deserved lead midway through the first half. Kevin Strootman set up Erik Falkenburg and the latter opened the scoring with a calm finish. A superb long range strike from Strootman doubled Sparta's lead after the break before substitute Charles Dissels made it three after another assist from Strootman. Dissels made things even worse for Baronie ten minutes before the final whistle after yet another Strootman pass. Man of the match Strootman then missed a spot kick, but youngster Joshua John made it five after all for Sparta with a shot from close range.
Feyenoord 1-0 AZ
The home side started the match the better side of the two and Georginio Wijnaldum could have opened the score for Feyenoord after a good one-two with Jon Dahl Tomasson. The young winger aimed wide though and the chance went begging. Then AZ attacker Mounir el Hamdaoui tried his luck from long range, but Feyenoord glovesman Rob van Dijk parried the ball away. Wijnaldum did break the deadlock minutes before the interval. AZ goalie Sergio Romero failed to hold on to a Sekou Cisse shot and Wijnaldum tapped home the rebound. In form attacker Jeremain Lens should have levelled the score after a great individual move, but he failed to beat the Feyenoord goalie. Brazilian striker Ari came close to scoring the equaliser halfway the second half, but Ron Vlaar cleared his header off the line. Rasmus Elm came close will a well taken free kick, but Van Dijk proved unbeatable and helped Feyenoord to the next round.
