According to RTV Noord, Groningen midfielder Jordi Hoogstrate is considering ending his active career with immediate effect. The 25-year-old is currently sidelined due to a knee injury.
The holding midfielder is a product of the Groningen youth academy and was regarded as a huge talent in the beginning of his career. Hoogstrate was snapped up by PSV in 2003, but mental problems prevented him from making an impact at the Eindhoven side.
Hoogstrate left PSV for Emmen in 2005 in order to get regular first team football and find back his best form. However, the former Holland under-21 starlet sustained a string of serious knee injuries and failed to return to top level.
Groningen appointed him as youth coach in 2008 and opted to hand him a last chance to prove his worth as footballer. Nevertheless, Hoogstrate once again sustained a knee injury that kept him off the pitch.
The Groningen-born midfielder was on the verge of returning to training action when he endured a recovery setback earlier this week. Therefore, Hoogstrate will probably announce his retirement on Monday and focus on a coaching career.
