The Eredivisie side have confirmed the deal for the young Belgian forward on their official website...Utrecht have completed the transfer of highly rated youngster Dries Mertens from AGOVV for a transfer fee of €600,000. The club's official website announced the conclusion of the deal.
The ambitious club have been in the market for a new striker since the departure of Robin Nelisse to Red Bull Salzburg last summer. New signings Ali Boussaboun and Morten Skoubo have both failed to impress this campaign.
Additionally, Utrecht appear very likely to lose star player Cedric van der Gun to Feyenoord on a Bosman move. The former Ajax youngster has refused to sign a new contract at Utrecht.
The 21-year-old Mertens is a product of the Gent youth academy and signed for AGOVV in 2006. The Belgian youngster has made 103 league appearances so far for the Apeldoorn side, scoring 28 goals.
Utrecht faced stiff competition for the services of Mertens. Eredivisie table toppers AZ and Groningen were reportedly also closely monitoring the youngster's situation.
