Everton face a race against time to sign Nikica Jelavic with the Rangers striker desperate to complete a move to Goodison Park before the transfer window closes on Tuesday night.
Toffees manager David Moyes made his move for the Croatian international on Sunday with a bid believed to be worth around £4.5 million, well short of Rangers’ reported £8m valuation of the player.
Talks are ongoing between the clubs as they work on a deal, with Everton looking to spend the money freed up by Diniyar Bilyaletdinov’s £5m move to Spartak Moscow.
Goal.com understands West Ham are prepared to pay more for the 26-year-old and there have been suggestions the Championship club could be willing to bid as much as £8m.
But Jelavic is keen to play in the Premier League and will push Rangers, who have financial problems, to drop their asking price so he can complete a switch to Goodison Park.
The Toffees are eager to boost their frontline and have made Jelavic, scorer of 17 goals this season, their top target for the remainder of the transfer window.
Moyes is a long-term admirer of Jelavic and tried to sign him before he joined Rangers from Rapid Vienna in 2010.
