Two former Chinese FA bosses jailed along with four ex-national team players
The crackdown on corruption in Chinese football reached a milestone this week with eight people, including two ex-chiefs, imprisoned for such crimes
Two former Chinese Football Association (CFA) heads have been sentenced to 10-and-a-half years in jail following a crackdown on corruption in the sport in the Middle Kingdom.According to Xinhua News Agency, Nan Yong and his predecessor Xie Yalong were imprisoned for taking bribes believed to be worth RMB1.48 million (€185,000) and RMB1.7m (€212,000) over the course of their terms.
The two former CFA heads were sentenced on Wednesday along with four ex-China internationals, a national team official and a former head of the Chongqing Football Association.
Former national team players Qi Hong, Jiang Jin and Li Ming were all sentenced to five-and-a-half year terms, while Shen Si received a six-year sentence.
It is understood the players took bribes to fix domestic games, including one late in the 2003 season where their club Shanghai Guoji lost 2-1 to Tianjin Teda, which helped the victors avoid the drop, and Guoji's city rival Shenhua clinch the league title.
Qi Hong famously scored three key goals for China in the Asian zone second stage in qualifying for the 2002 World Cup finals against UAE and Oman to help send the national team to their first World Cup.
