Lippi: I have the best team in China

Lippi: I have the best team in China

The seasoned Italian manager hailed the players at his disposal, and welcomes the opportunity to work with players like Lucas Barrios

Marcello Lippi has claimed that his Guangzhou Evergrande have the best players in China.

Lippi, who lead Italy to the 2006 World Cup and brought five Scudetti to Juventus, is relishing the prospect of working with the club's new signings as well as talents returning from injury.

“I have perhaps the best team in China," he said in an interview published on Tuesday in La Gazzetta dello Sport. "Soon, I’ll also have at my disposal the injured Muriqui, a top Brazilian scorer and Yang Ning, a talented midfielder. Then [Lucas] Barrios from Dortmund. I told the players that I’ve watched them for three months and there is nobody better than them.”

However, he revealed that at first he was sceptical about taking on the role with the Chinese club.

“I answered no [initially]. Then I saw the games, thought about it and changed my mind.

"I wanted it [the managerial position] at all costs. Training alone is not enough and I am a [Manchester United boss Sir Alex] Ferguson-like manager: I think of everything. Guangzhou want to become important and that’s why I explained that to do this they need European tactics.”

The Italian manager says that the reference for success is “planning and being methodical", and stated that he has turned down various offers to return to football management since leaving the Azzurri in 2010.

“I said no to Italian clubs this year," he continued. "I wanted to go overseas before, but I refused the Emirates, Qatar, Ukraine, Saudi Arabia, and some time ago, even the Chinese national team. But Guangzhou convinced me.”

But he did admit fears that his tactical ideas may become lost in translation.

“You must explain tactics to the interpreter during training and the actual game and you do not know if the message is received as you intended. In fact, the best we have played has always been at the beginning of the second half and when the game is stopped for injuries."

Lippi, who picked up a narrow 1-0 victory over Qingdao Joonon in his first game at the helm, also signalled that this could be his final managerial role.

“I hope to keep on managing for three years or more. Afterwards, I do not know, but my career is at its end.”

Champions League final - LIVE!
German giants Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund will battle it out at Wembley for European glory. Get involved by sending us your thoughts via Twitter or Facebook! Hosted by Mark Doyle.

Former Dortmund goalkeeper Jens Lehmann was present at the Champions League festival earlier and he is tipping his former side for the title: "I think Bayern are a little stronger but if I was to have a bet, I would bet on Dortmund because that would win me more money!"

However, our tipster Hugh Wilson reckons that the value is a punt on both sides scoring in the first half ...

Dortmund are keen: They've already arrived at Wembley. Former Dortmund defender Christoph Metzelder can understand his old side's desire to get to the ground as early as possible. "This is the most horrible time ahead of the match," he told Sky Germany. "The tension is huge on the way to the stadium until you can finally warm-up and get on the pitch."

However, former Bayern boss Ottmar Hitzfeld says it doesn't matter when Dortmund arrive, they're still not going to lift the Champions League tonight: "Bayern has to win the title; it's just their time. They won't let a third final in four years slip away from them."
6:02 PM BST
Now back to our man, Jay Jaffa, who is outside the ground:

"I've just had a chat with a man called Helmut. As you will see from the photo, Helmut arrived here by bicycle ... He said: 'It took me 10 days. I didn't see the sun once: it was raining, powerful winds, horrible, but I made it. I rode 554 miles to get here but ... I don't have a ticket.'

"Ouch! I feel for Helmut, he looks absolutely drained and I reckon he was relying on the gift of charity as his way in, but alas it is yet to find him."

Just a reminder that our Champions League quiz is still going on over on Twitter, so there's still time to get involved. Another cracking question from quizmaster Chris Myson:

In this year's competition, five Barcelona players have completed more passes than anyone else - name them!
