Clint Dempsey is expected to play in the USA's World Cup match against Portugal despite fracturing his nose against Ghana on Monday.

The Seattle Sounders man was kicked in the face during the USA's 2-1 victory over the Black Stars in their first game of the tournament.

Dempsey played through the pain after his face met the foot of John Boye in the 32nd minute. He said he had trouble breathing but still managed to finish the match and is expected to be available for the meeting with Paulo Bento's men.

Dempsey fired his side into an early lead in their first game of the summer showpiece, but Ghana soon began to dominate the game. Andre Ayew eventually leveled the match in the 82nd minute but American defender John Brooks headed in the winner with four minutes left on the clock.

Meanwhile, the Jurgen Klisnmann's men are still awaiting MRI results on Jozy Altidore and Matt Besler, both of whom left the Ghana game with hamstring injuries.
