Luis Montes out of World Cup after double leg fracture

The Leon midfielder had grown into a key player for Mexico, but Miguel Herrera's side will have to do without him in Brazil after he suffered the injury against Ecuador
Mexico’s World Cup hopes were dealt a blow when Luis Montes was stretchered off with a broken right leg against Ecuador.

The Mexican federation's media officials confirmed Montes was taken to Memorial Hospital in Arlington, Texas following a collision with Segundo Castillo.

Both players went into the challenge, and replays showed Montes suffering a gruesome injury. After being down on the field for several minutes, he was stretchered off, with several of his teammates appearing to be in tears on the pitch.

The 28-year-old was later confirmed to have suffered a fracture to his leg and will therefore miss the finals in Brazil. Castillo was also taken to the hospital for evaluation on a right knee injury.

Rafa Marquez, the captain, was also taken to hospital during the match after taking a heavy knock to his toe.

Montes, 28, was expected to be a key player for El Tri in Brazil. He has 12 caps and three goals with the Mexico senior team to date.
