The stadium is located in Brazil's capital city, Brasilia.
Estadio Mane Garrincha has been all but demolished to make way for the stadium. Renovations will almost double the stadium's capacity to over 70,000 and build a new facade, metal roof and stands, as well as a lowered pitch enabling unobstructed views from every seat.

The stadium will also host some matches for the 2016 Olympic football tournament, with the next Games being held in Brazil. It will also be used to facilitate concerts and cultural events after the World Cup and will be the second-largest ground at the tournament.
