'We did well to get a point' - James McCarthy pleased with team performance

The Ireland midfielder was very happy that his side kept Zlatan Ibrahimovic quiet and were good value for a 0-0 draw with Sweden in Stockholm

Ireland midfielder James McCarthy says that the team performance is the most important thing after putting in a Man of the Match display in the 0-0 draw against Sweden following a late injury to Glenn Whelan.

McCarthy was initally overlooked for the starting 11, but was drafted in at last minute after an ankle injury to Whelan. The 22-year-old was delighted with the result in Stockholm. "It's a very tough place to come, they're no passengers," McCarthy told RTE. We can see they're doing well in the group."

"Unfortunately Glenn got injured, and I got into the team. I obviously wanted to come in and do well. But it's not about me, it's about the team. We did well, very well to come here and get a point.

"We had a couple of decent chances, and could have sneaked it at the end. We've come here and put in a very efficient performance and gotten a point."

The Republic of Ireland continue their World Cup qualifying campaign on Tuesday, March 26 at the Aviva Stadium against Austria.
