The captain is adamant while he is proud of the impending achievement he must stay professional on Tuesday, while revealing the 5-1 beating of Germany as his favourite memory

Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard has insisted helping England to a win against Poland in Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier is his only focus, despite being in line to earn his 99th cap for his country.

Only five players have achieved a century of caps for the Three Lions, with LA Galaxy midfielder David Beckham the most recent player to reach the landmark.

Gerrard has spoken of his pride at wearing England’s colours, but will stay professional against a tough Poland side.

"Every time you put the England shirt on it is a proud moment," he told Sky Sports.

"To get 99 is a fantastic achievement for myself but it will only be a good memory tomorrow night if we get the three points that we came for."

When asked what his favourite England memory was, the 32-year-old reflected on the Three Lions’ famous 5-1 victory over Germany in 2001.

"If I was pushed and had to pick one game it would have to be Germany, the 1-5 game away in Munich," he added.

Ashley Cole is also in line to achieve his 99th cap on Tuesday evening, with Frank Lampard next in line with 93.
