The Samurai Blue defender has become a regular member of VVV's lineup in the last two seasons but could leave this summer for a club in Germany, Italy or even England
The Japan international, whose contract is set to expire in June of next year, scored five goals in 30 appearances this season, tied for second overall at the club.
"Maya feels that the time has come to make the next step in his career and we agree with him," Berden told Voetbal International.
"It's important for him both for his personal development, and for his status in the national team to make the next step.
"I expect him to leave in the summer. Several clubs from England, Germany and Italy are keeping tabs on him."
After losing to newly-crowned Eredivisie champions Ajax on Wednesday night, VVV will participate in the league's promotion-relegation playoffs after being assured of a 16th-place finish.
