Betting on football matches is challenging even for the most experienced and avid betting enthusiasts. It can throw up surprises and shocks but compared to betting on managerial markets it's the most stable of pastimes. In a way it's the crown green bowling to the skeleton bob if you like.

Pre-match price swings on football matches can see a price of 7/4 collapse to 6/4 over the course of an afternoon, whereas betting on managerial markets can see a price of 20/1 collapse to 1/10 and swing out to 50/1 the following day all based on rumour and news stories that are released.

A few weeks ago, anyone looking at the Fulham managerial betting market would have seen a clear choice between Sven Goran Eriksson and Ottmar Hitzfeld. Some may have even considered placing large stakes on at least one of the above named candidates to ‘seal in a profit’.

Fast forward to Tuesday of this week and Martin Jol is as short a price as 1.08 and the media is reporting the him as the manager of the Cottagers whilst Ajax haven’t even had a chance to say... well, no chance.

So how can the punter outwit the bookie? Well, remember there is as much risk and unpredictability for the bookmaker as there is the punter. In fact traders generally hate managerial markets because they have had their fingers burnt more times than a toddler with a sparkler at a fireworks show. So the punter has to watch the events like a hawk and then swoop when the price is ripe for the kill.

The skill in betting on these markets is backing a winner before announcements are made in the media. Ask yourself, do you have an insight? Have you seen or heard something?

Can you interpret an interview like when Roy Hodgson was asked about the Liverpool job in June and he proceeded to talk about what a wonderful club they were and how there had been no contact so far. Reading between the lines was easy, “If they ring me, I’m off... oh and if anyone from Liverpool is watching here is my phone number!”

Perhaps the worst thing a punter can do is react to a media story and back a selection at a tiny price. Far from buying money, you may as well set light to it. The skill is to back at a high price and then hold your nerve. If you are backing at reasonable prices you don’t have to be right every time to see a return on your investments.

One final rule, don’t react or believe when bookmakers announce they have “closed the book” or taken a five figure bet on a certain candidate. These are used for PR reasons and it would be tough to pick out the genuine announcements from those that are less so!

When there are so many twists and turns, so many announcements and denials, betting on managerial markets can be exhilarating and rewarding as long as you manage your stakes and your timing is good.
