While Los Blancos remain favourites, a change of manager for the Giallorossi as well as four successive Serie A wins have brought some optimism to the Stadio Olimpico where previously there had been only frustration.
Roma now sit fourth in the Italian top flight, and their home record this season is relatively strong, with the side from the Italian capital only losing one of the 16 competitive fixtures they have played at the Olimpico this term. Yet within their home record lies a good example of how frustrating the side have been, drawing with Barcelona 1-1 but also being held to a goalless draw by BATE Borisov.
That the Italians are in the last 16 at all in something of a surprise given their seemingly paltry total of six points in the group stages and a poor defensive record which saw them concede 16 times - a record for a team reaching the knockout stages.
Madrid are one of two unbeaten teams in competition (the other being Barcelona) with Zinedine Zidane's side the joint top scorers in the tournament with Bayern Munich.
Los Blancos have won three and lost one of their four Champions League matches away to Roma, scoring on every trip to face the Giallorossi and Betway offer them at 5/6 (1.83) to record another win on Wednesday evening. Roma meanwhile are offered at 10/3 (4.33) with the draw availabe at 11/4 (3.75).
With Madrid scoring freely in the Champions League this season and Roma looking in decent form in front of goal in the last few weeks a logical selection would be to back both teams to score which is offered at 8/13 (1.62).
Serious punters might consider this price as single bet but generally it is probably best for a multiple selection. Barely more appealing is the price of 4/6 (1.65) for Real Madrid to score over 1.5 goals, which should have an excellent chance of paying out but once more will entince only the most serious of investment.
Instead, we will look for some higher odds and consider the tempting 11/5 (3.20) offered for both teams to score and Real Madrid to win.
Madrid have conceded in seven of their last nine matches in all competitions and on the road they have only kept one clean sheet in their last eight fixtures. Nevertheless they should be too strong for Roma, despite the Italians' recent revival, so we will back the away side to win but fail to keep a clean sheet.
