Wellington Phoenix, who were formed in 2007, are their opposition. The New Zealanders play in the Australian A-League, but they struggled last season, finishing ninth out of 10 teams.
Ernie Merrick's men lost their last four A-League matches at the end of the season, conceding 14 goals in the process. However, the Nix got back to winning ways last week, beating Wellington Olympic 2-0 in their first friendly this summer. Paddy Power price them at 4/1 (5.00) for a shock win over West Ham.
Sam Allardyce will be keen for his side to pick up their first victory and do it in style after a largely disappointing summer so far. The Hammers have drawn their two previous pre-season fixtures, needing two late goals to rescue a draw against League Two Stevenage before a stalemate against Ipswich Town. Paddy Power price them at 8/15 (1.53) to win, with the same firm pricing the draw at 3/1 (4.00).
Despite West Ham drawing 0-0 last time out, friendlies usually see plenty of goals, with the market siding with goals in this fixture. Over 2.5 goals at 8/13 (1.62) is a little short with Paddy Power.
In Wellington's last six losses in the A-League, they were thrashed in five of those matches, losing 4-1 twice, 5-0 twice and 5-1. When Merrick's side lose, they don't seem to have much of an answer to their opposition as the flood gates open. With this in mind, the handicap bet for West Ham -1 at 13/8 (2.63) seems like a fantastic price when you consider Allardyce will go all-out for the win in this game as they look to pick up their first victory of the season.
