Tottenham-Benfica Betting Preview: Expect plenty of goals at White Hart Lane in an open European tie

After a sensational comeback against Dnipro in the last round of the Europa League, Tim Sherwood's side take on the Portuguese giants, with our tipster backing goals

Tottenham Hotspur face Benfica this evening in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final clash at White Hart Lane.

Spurs had been impressive in the competition before the last round, winning every game, but a loss against Dnipro away in the last-16 first leg saw them struggling to qualify for this stage until an Emmanuel Adebayor double at White Hart Lane led Tottenham to an impressive comeback, winning 3-2 on aggregate after trailing 2-0.

Benfica come into this match unbeaten in their last 23 games, thrashing PAOK 4-0 on aggregate in the last round of the Europa League. Jorge Jesus' side have only played two matches in this competition all season having finished third in their Champions League group behind Paris Saint-Germain and Olympiakos. Paddy Power price them at 21/10 (3.10) to win the match.

Spurs will be looking to bounce back after a disappointing weekend away at Chelsea. Sherwood's side were hammered 4-0 at Stamford Bridge, which has hampered their ambitions of a top-four finish and qualifying for the Champions League next season and the Tottenham boss will expect a reaction.

With three defeats in the last five matches, Spurs and their manager may feel a point will need to be proved tonight. Paddy Power price them at 11/8 (2.38) to win, with the same firm valuing the draw at 9/4 (3.25).

Despite Tottenham's price being the highest it's been at home this season in Europe, it's tough to back when you consider the calibre of their opponents. Benfica are playing sensational football at the moment and will fancy themselves to score a goal having scored in their last 23 games.

Instead of backing either side outright, the over 2.5 goals bet at 11/10 (2.10) looks appealing with Paddy Power. Spurs will know they will need to go to Portugal with an advantage, so expect them to come out looking for goals. With this in mind, they may be left short at the back which will suit Benfica.

In Europe, this bet would have paid out in three of Benfica's last four matches, as well as in every Spurs home Europa League match this season.
