thumbnail Hello,

Uwe Rosler takes charge of the Latics for the first time on Thursday but our tipster believes that the English Championship side may will taste defeat in Slovenia

Wigan Athletic travel to Slovenia on Thursday night knowing that victory against Maribor is essential if they are to stand any chance of progressing to the last 32 of this season’s Europa League.

Defeat against Zulte-Waregem at DW Stadium in their last Europa League tie means that the Latics must beat their Slovenian rivals and hope that group winners Rubin Kazan are victorious against Zulte-Waregem in order to reach the knockout stages.

Former Brentford boss Uwe Rosler will take charge of the Latics for the first time, having replaced Owen Coyle at the helm earlier this month, and the 2013 FA Cup winners can be backed at 7/5 (2.40) with William Hill to ensure that the German's reign gets off to a winning start on Thursday.

Maribor have lost both of their previous home matches in the group stages of the competition and are available at 2/1 (3.0) with William Hill to claim victory here, while the same firm offer 11/5 (3.20) that Thursday’s tussle ends in stalemate.

Wigan’s only European triumph to date came when these sides met at DW Stadium back in October, with on-loan Manchester United man Nick Powell netting twice in a 3-1 victory for the Latics.

Should the 19-year-old midfielder repeat those heroics here, there would be value in backing William Hill’s special 3/1 (4.0) “headline offer” quote that Powell nets at any time in a Wigan win.

However, it should be noted that Wigan have lost each of their last five matches in all competitions and, with promotion to the Premier League identified as Rosler’s primary objective between now and the end of the season, Thursday’s encounter could well be seen as something of an unwelcome distraction for the Latics.

With that in mind, there could be value in backing the home side to claim all three points against the out-of-sorts visitors.

Maribor have lost just one of their last seven matches in all competitions and, in forcing a draw against Rubin Kazan in Russia last month, Ante Simundza’s men showed considerable character.

Therefore, the hosts are worth backing at a generous 2/1 (3.0) with William Hill to enjoy victory over Rosler’s men.
