South Africa-Spain Betting Preview: Back la Roja to secure a win after half-time

Phil Kitromilides believes the visitors could struggle to break down the hosts but should ultimately prevail on their return to Johannesburg
Spain return to the scene of their greatest ever triumph on Tuesday as they take on South Africa in the stadium where they clinched their inaugural world title three years ago.

Since then, of course, Vicente del Bosque's side have added another European Championship to their list of honours, yet there remain questions being asked about the side's capacity to defend the World Cup next year.

Why the questions are being asked remains something of a mystery as Spain possess one the most talented squads on the planet, and qualified with ease from a potentially tricky group, conceding just three goals in 10 matches.

They are priced at just 1/5 (1.20) with bet365 to overcome South Africa while the hosts can be backed at 10/1 (11.00). A draw is available at 5/1 (6.00).

La Roja will be hoping for a less bruising encounter than their previous friendly on Saturday, when Equatorial Guinea flew into a number of often overly-aggressive challenges. South Africa, however, are a stronger team technically and are unlikely to rely on the same tactic.

Though they are expected to win, Spain have been consistent if not spectacular in recent months. High-scoring victories have been few and far between for the world champions and while they are better than almost every side they face, they sometimes need time to break them down.

To that end, the price of 11/4 (3.75) for Draw/Spain in the half-time/full-time market looks like an appealing option for a small bet. This selection paid out in Spain's match against Belarus last month and though it might appear to be an unorthodox bet, it is well worth considering for a small investment.
