Our Spanish expert Phil Kitromilides believes the visitors will get a positive result on their return to the Primera Divison on Monday night
Box office it is not, and this should be a bit of a scrap between two sides who's first priority is survival. Despite an historic eighth placed finish last season Rayo are being tipped by many to struggle in the forthcoming campaign for the simple reason that they have lost almost all of their players.
Forwards Piti and Leo Baptistao have both departed and between them they accounted for half of Rayo's 50 league goals last season.
With the like of Amat, Fuego and Dominguez also gone Rayo have lost the spine of their talented unit from the previous campaign and there will be few people rushing to back them at BetVictor's price of 13/10 (2.30).
Elche are more of an unknown quanitity given their long absence from the top flight but their comfortable clinching of the Segunda title was done by grinding out results.
Effective rather than attractive might be an appropriate description for the visitors and they can be backed at 23/10 (3.30) to get off to a winning start. The draw meanwhile which would not be a bad result for either side is offered at 12/5 (3.40).
Indeed Elche in the Segunda last season, were an extremely difficult unit to break down, conceding just 27 goals in 42 matches.
The step up to the top flight is of course a rather steep one, yet against a hastily thrown together Rayo side, Elche will feel that this is an excellent chance for them to ease their way back into life amongst the country's elite.
Elche Draw No Bet is offered at 13/10 (2.30) and is well worthy of some serious consideration for a small investment.
Rayo's defending at times last season was stunningly poor, a fact underlined by their conceding of 29 goals at home (only relegated Mallorca conceded more). Rayo's defence is now weaker than it was and Elche have enough about them to cause the hosts problems.
