After a mixed pre-season and woeful opening day match for Greg Abbott’s men, Hugh Wilson expects Rovers to roll over their opponents and progress to the next roundCarlisle United host Blackburn Rovers in the Capital One Cup tonight after a nightmare start to their League One campaign. The Cumbrians were thrashed 5-1 at home to Leyton Orient on Saturday, finishing the game with 10 men.
Blackburn on the other hand netted late to salvage a draw away at Derby County. Both sides come into this match looking to kick start their season, with both managers looking to name strong line ups.
Gary Bowyer’s men travel up the M6 this evening looking to build on their weekend result. Rovers had a solid pre-season, winning two, drawing one and losing to Everton at the end of July.
Bowyer has been busy in the transfer market this summer, adding the likes of DJ Campbell, Alan Judge and Matthew Kilgallon.
More importantly though, Rovers have managed to keep hold of Jordan Rhodes, who scored an astonishing 29 goals last season. Paddy Power price the Lancashire side as favourites at 21/20 (2.05) to win the game in 90 minutes.
Carlisle struggled to put together any sort of consistency during their pre-season fixtures. Abbott’s men recorded a solid 1-0 victory over Bolton, but lost to Burnley and Annan, as well as failing to beat Kilmarnock and non league side Workington.
The Cumbrians made two solid signings this summer, bringing in David Amoo from Tranmere Rovers, as well as Lewis Guy from St Mirren. Amoo netted their only goal in Saturdays heavy defeat against Leyton Orient.
Paddy Power price them at 12/5 (3.40) to progress to the next round in 90 minutes. The same firm price the draw at 12/5 (3.40).
Blackburn to win at 21/20 (2.05) seems like a fantastic bet in this fixture. With Leyton Orient tearing Abbott’s men apart at the weekend, expect a strong Rovers side to comfortably win at Brunton Park, with the likes of Leon Best, Marcus Olsson, David Dunn and Alan Judge all likely to get game time.
For those looking for more value, backing Rovers in the handicap market at -1 at 11/4 (3.75) with Paddy Power is worth a small investment. With Carlisle shipping five goals last Saturday, there could be value in backing Rovers to inflict more damage on their seemingly fragile defence.
