Preston-Blackpool Betting Preview: Expect defences to come out on top at Deepdale

Simon Grayson and Paul Ince have added a resilient streak to their teams since both taking over in February and our tipster does not expect many goals when they face off
Simon Grayson faces the club where his managerial career began on Monday, as his Preston side take on Blackpool in a Capital One Cup first round clash.

The Lilywhites were held to a goalless draw by Wolves in their opening league game on Saturday, but are available at 19/10 (2.90) with BetVictor to record their first competitive victory of the new season tonight.

The visitors have been knocked out in each of their previous two meetings against this evening’s opponents in this competition, but are slight 31/20 (2.55) favourites to emerge victorious this time out.

The last two encounters between these sides have both resulted in draws, and you can get odds of 12/5 (3.40) on them cancelling each other out once again here.

Coincidentally, Grayson and his counterpart Paul Ince were both appointed to their current roles on the same day in February of last season, and did enough in the final few months to provide optimism for the current campaign.

Both managers were known for their steely defensive work at the back and in midfield during their playing days, and it is in this department where they seem to have made the biggest impact on their teams since taking command.

While Ince led a side that had let in 46 goals in 31 games to concede just 17 in the remaining 15, Grayson’s men were only breached on a paltry seven occasions in the same period, and it would be no surprise if the defences were on top tonight.

A bet on under 2.5 goals would have paid out in an amazing 15 of the hosts’ last 16 competitive fixtures, and is well worth backing at tempting 19/20 (1.95) odds in this one.

Preston knocked out Championship sides Huddersfield and Crystal Palace on their way to the third round in last season’s competition, thanks in part to the prolific performances of midfielder Nicky Wroe.

The 27-year-old struck three times in three Capital One Cup fixtures last campaign, and was also his side’s top scorer in League One, so offers potential value at 16/5 (4.20) to hit the back of the net at Deepdale.
