With days to go before the Championship season commences, Hugh Wilson looks at the candidates for the golden boot, with our tipster taking backing a standout price from CoralWith last season's top goalscorer in the Championship Glen Murray gaining promotion to the top flight with Crystal Palace, it opens up the way for a new star to emerge from the second tier of English football.
|Championship Top Scorer
|Odds from Coral
|Adam Le Fondre||12/1|
Favourite for this year's golden boot is the man who finished just one goal behind Murray on 28 league goals last term: Blackburn’s Jordan Rhodes.
The £8 million man is 6/1 (7.00) with Coral, despite speculation linking him away from Rovers. Rhodes has found goals wherever he has played, making his mark at Huddersfield.
With Blackburn still under the ownership of Venkey’s though, it’s tough to say where their season will go, but Rhodes will always guarantee goals.
Leicester’s Chris Wood had a fantastic season last term, netting 11 goals for Millwall in the first half of the campaign before carrying on his form for the Foxes after signing for them in January.
The New Zealand international is 10/1 (11.00) with Coral to finish at the top of the pile, but with Wood only finding the net twice in his last 15 league games at the end of last season, it’s worth avoiding this bet.
Just behind Wood is Reading’s Adam Le Fondre, who is another player who has found goals wherever he has played.
Le Fondre was part of the Reading side relegated from the Premier League last season, but the 26-year-old still managed to net 12 goals, most of them coming after he was introduced from the bench. The Royals striker is 12/1 (13.00) with Coral, but with their forwards department so competitive, whether he will get the game time is another question.
A price that stands out from Coral is Watford’s Troy Deeney at a huge 25/1 (26.00). If you were to back Deeney with any other firms, you would get between 10-18/1, with Coral being the standout price.
The Watford man spearheaded the Hornets' run to Wembley last season, grabbing the vital goal against Leicester to send them to the playoff final.
Deeney scored 20 league goals last term and finished the season with intent, scoring four goals in his last five matches. With Gianfranco Zola likely to use Deeney as his main striker in the absence of Matej Vydra, the 25/1 (26.00) price cannot be ignored.
