Peterborough-Sheffield Wednesday Betting Preview: Expect plenty of goals in this relegation six-pointer

London Road plays host to a potentially-decisive battle in the fight to beat the drop, and Al Hain-Cole expects an entertaining game to produce goalmouth action at both ends
The term ‘relegation six-pointer’ can sometimes be thrown around too carelessly in football, but for Saturday’s clash between Peterborough and Sheffield Wednesday, it could not be more apt.

With just two games of the Championship season left to play, the result of this match could potentially decide which division the teams are playing in next year.

Only goal difference separates Darren Ferguson’s men from the bottom three going into this weekend, so they will be desperately hoping for a win in their final home game to give themselves a bit of breathing space, and Bet Victor are offering odds of 7/5 (2.40) on the hosts coming out on top.

The Owls boast a four-point cushion over the drop zone, so can secure their survival with a win at London Road, available at 21/10 (3.10).

Depending on other results, a draw could also be enough for Dave Jones’ side, and you can get odds of 5/2 (3.50) on this one finishing all square.

It is not hard to pinpoint why the Posh are in the precarious position they currently find themselves, and it is not down to a lack of firepower.

Only six teams have scored more than Ferguson’s side, but with 72 goals conceded, they have the worst defensive record in the division, excluding already-relegated Bristol City.

This combination has certainly led to some entertaining encounters this season, and there should be plenty of goalmouth action on Saturday against a side that have only failed to score twice in their last 10 matches.

A bet on both teams to score would have paid out in six of the visitors’ last seven and three of the hosts’ last four, making it well worth backing at 13/20 (1.65) when they go head-to-head.

One man Peterborough may look to for goals is Grant McCann, who has bagged seven so far this season, with three coming in the last six games.

The Northern Irish midfielder is charged with taking the side’s set pieces, and his expertise from the penalty spot makes him a potentially lucrative outside bet at 7/2 (4.50) to hit the back of the net against Wednesday.
