Betting Special: Adkins favourite for vacant Reading role

Betting Special: Adkins favourite for vacant Reading role

Latest Betting Special: Van Persie provides value in the fight for the Premier League Golden Boot Previous Next Gary Bowyer early favourite to take over at Ewood Park as Blackburn part company with Appleton

The Royals are searching for a new manager after parting company with Brian McDermott and Willie Duncan thinks that Nigel Adkins is a worthy favourite to take up the vacant post

Former Southampton manager Nigel Adkins has been installed as Paddy Power’s red-hot 1/2 (1.50) favourite to take over the Reading hotseat following the departure of Brian McDermott earlier this month.

The Royals, of course, are not in action for another 10 days and the board may look to act swiftly to appoint McDermott’s successor during the international break to allow the new boss time to settle into the job as Reading attempt to retain their Premier League status.

Next permanent Reading manager

Odds from Paddy Power
Nigel Adkins 1/2
Luis Enrique 7/1
Eamonn Dolan 8/1
Paolo Di Canio 8/1
Roberto Di Matteo 8/1
Adkins, who was surprisingly sacked by the Saints back in January, would undoubtedly relish the chance of an immediate return to top flight football and could be tempted to take on the top job at Madejski Stadium.

The Royals currently sit in 19th place in the Premier League – seven points adrift of safety – and Adkins looks set to be the man charged with the tough task of keeping Reading in the top flight.

Former Roma coach Luis Enrique is rated as a 7/1 (8.0) chance with Paddy Power to succeed Brian McDermott, while current caretaker boss Eamonn Dolan is rated as an 8/1 (9.0) shot with the Irish bookmakers to take the role on a full-time basis.

Another interesting contender is former Swindon Town manager Paolo Di Canio.

There is no doubt that the appointment of the 44-year-old Italian would attract plenty of media interest but it seems likely that Sir John Madejski will look to a less controversial character to lead the Royals in what looks to be a near-impossible battle to beat the drop.

Di Canio had been the favourite for the post when the markets opened but has now drifted out to 8/1 (9.0) with Paddy Power to take charge, while former Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo can also be backed at 8/1 (9.0) with the same firm.

It is Adkins, though, who best appears to fit the  profile for Reading and, therefore, the 1/2 (1.50) quote from Paddy Power for the former Southampton manager to be appointed as the club's' next permanent boss seems the most logical move, although some punters will be put off by such a short odds-on quote.
