thumbnail Hello,

Brian McDermott paid the price for a run of four consecutive Premier League losses, meaning the Royals are now four points from safety with just nine games to go

The timing may be questionable but Brian McDermott has left Reading and the 19th-placed club in the Premier League are now on the hunt for a manager to attempt to save themselves from an immediate return to the Championship.

Paolo Di Canio impressed in his time at Swindon, but left the club recently. He was tentatively linked with several high-profile jobs in the Football League over the last year or so but would the 44-year-old want to take up the relegation threatened Royals as his first managerial position in the Premier League? He is also available at 6/1 to take over.

Alan Curbishley leads the market at 12/1 along with several other candidates, although the former Charlton and West Ham boss has been out of work for five years since leaving the Hammers.

Next Permanent Reading Manager

Odds from Paddy Power
Alan Curbishley 12/1
Roberto Di Matteo 10/1
Paolo Di Canio 6/1
Mark Hughes 12/1
Nigel Adkins 8/1
Steve McClaren 25/1
The short timescale may dictate that the Reading hierarchy will have to appoint a candidate who is currently unattached, especially with a trip to Manchester United looming large on Saturday afternoon.

Any new manager will face an uphill challenge as a visit to Emirates follows that game before a crucial encounter at home against Southampton the following weekend.

There are several high profile names in the running according the markets, including Roberto Di Matteo, who lead Chelsea to an FA Cup and Champions League double less than a year ago. The Italian is a 10/1 shot with Paddy Power to take over at the Madejski Stadium.

Mark Hughes is available at 12/1 to take the reins at the Madejski. Hughes was sacked by QPR earlier in the season and his former side still sit bottom of the Premier League, a return would see the 49-year-old take over the club only above his previous employers on goal difference.

Nigel Adkins is another manager who was relieved of his duties by a Premier League club in the previous few months, having left Southampton in January to be replaced by Mauricio Pochettino. Adkins is available to back at 8/1 with Paddy Power to Reading's next permanent manager.

There are a whole host of longer priced candidates including Karl Robinson of MK Dons and Steve McClaren, who recently left Twente after an unsuccessful second spell in charge while Alex McLeish is a 25/1 shot to take over.
