Mallorca - Barcelona Betting Preview: Hapless hosts may struggle against Vilanova's men

After a shock 2-1 defeat in the Champions League, Jim Knight expects another high-scoring game when the league leaders travel to Iberostar Stadium on Sunday
Mallorca made a very encouraging start to the domestic season and their home record was the cornerstone of their success.

Wins for Joaquin Caparros' side over Espanyol, Real Sociedad and Valencia helped prop them up the Liga table, while creditable draws on the road kept the points total ticking over.

But that form has come to an abrupt end and it's now five straight league defeats for Sunday's hosts, including a 5-0 mauling by Real Madrid in their most recent home clash.

Add to that an injury list that is almost as long as their Catalan opponents and it's understandable to see a home win priced at 11/1 (12.0) by William Hill while the draw is available at 9/2 (5.50).

Barcelona are priced at just 1/4 (1.25) to get back to winning ways after being stunned by Celtic on Wednesday evening in the Champions League.

The absence of Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique is clearly being felt by Tito Vilanova's side and one clean sheet in five league games may encourage the home side, with both teams to score priced at 19/20 (1.95).

But many will expect Barcelona to vanquish the demons of Wednesday’s defeat at the first time of asking and one thing that seems guaranteed with their games of late is goals, and plenty of them.

There have been a staggering 27 strikes in Barcelona’s last five Liga matches, including a 5-4 win against Deportivo.

With that in mind, take the 6/5 (2.20) available on over 3.5 goals being scored in the game with William Hill.

While the Catalan defence looks prone to costly errors, the attacking side of Barcelona's game has no such issues, and, after a surprise defeat in midweek, Mallorca could find themselves faced with somewhat of a backlash, especially after Real Madrid’s recent win highlighted their own defensive frailties.

For a longshot, consider full-back Jordi Alba to find the net. The summer arrival from Valencia was one of the stars as Spain secured another European crown and the 23-year-old has five goals in his last seven games for club and country. He's available at 11/4 (3.75) to score anytime for the visitors.
