Capital One Cup Treble: Southampton, Everton and Sunderland to show their quality

Capital One Cup Treble: Southampton, Everton and Sunderland to show their quality

Latest Theo Walcott, Didier Drogba and Lionel Messi - This week's Champions League fantasy football team Previous

Having picked out a winning 7/1 treble at the weekend, Al Hain-Cole turns his attention to tonight's Capital One Cup ties. He's gone for a Premier League clean sweep at almost 6/1

Capital One Cup Treble
Southampton
VS
Sheffield Wednesday
Kick-off: 19:45 GMT
Tip: Southampton to win at 3/4 (1.75) with PanBet

After picking up their first three points of the Premier League season with an impressive 4-1 win over Aston Villa on Saturday, Southampton will be in high spirits going into their League Cup game against Sheffield Wednesday.

Although The Saints are sure to rest several first-team players, assistant boss Andy Crosby insists that his side are taking the competition very seriously.

The absence of Ricky Lambert and Co. provides an opportunity for the current crop of youngsters from the club's celebrated academy to make a name for themselves, as the likes of James Ward-Prowse did to great effect in the 4-1 victory over Stevenage in the last round, meaning motivation should not be an issue.

Sheffield Wednesday's good start to the season has come off the rails recently, as The Owls come into this match on the back of a four-game losing streak.

Although they pulled off an upset against Fulham in the last round, Dave Jones's men will struggle to repeat that feat here, having failed to win on their last eight league and cup trips to Southampton. At odds of 3/4 (1.75) with Panbet, it is well worth backing the hosts to overcome lower-league opposition in this game.

Leeds
VS
Everton
Kick off: 19:45 GMT
Tip: Everton to win at 3/4 (1.75) with PanBet

Everton have come out of the blocks uncharacteristically quickly this season, with a string of impressive performances winning them points and plaudits in equal measure.

Despite enjoying an excellent managerial reputation, however, David Moyes is yet to win a trophy in his decade at Goodison, and must see this competition as his best chance of ending that record.

The strong team selection for the 5-0 win over Leyton Orient in the last round suggests that The Toffees are taking the League Cup very seriously this year, and this does not bode well for Leeds.

Neil Warnock's side have struggled against top-flight opposition in this competition in recent years, having been knocked out by Premier League sides on each of the last seven occasions they have been drawn against them.

Although Elland Road is still one of England's most emblematic stadiums, it is no longer quite the fortress it once was.

Leeds have lost eight of their last 15 league games on home turf, so this trip up the M62 should not hold too much fear for the visitors. Expect on-form Everton to qualify for the fourth round for the eighth time in 11 seasons tonight, at odds of 3/4 (1.75).

MK Dons
VS
Sunderland
Kick-off: 19:45 GMT
Sunderland to win at 31/25 (2.24) with PanBet

Few can be relied upon to take the League Cup more seriously than Martin O'Neill, as success in this competition seems to follow the Sunderland boss wherever he goes.

Having lifted the trophy twice as a player with Nottingham Forest, the Northern Irishman built the foundation of his successful managerial career on the three finals he reached during his time in charge of Leicester, winning two of those. He also took Aston Villa to the final in 2010, and now seems intent on achieving similar success with Sunderland.

The Black Cats fielded a virtually full-strength line-up in the previous round against Morecambe, and are expected to come out all guns blazing in this match.

They will need to be on top form to overcome an MK Dons side that have enjoyed a successful start to the season, playing attractive winning football under Karl Robinson.

Nevertheless, you can depend on O'Neill to ensure that his players are up to the task, and their superior quality should see them through a tricky encounter. At odds of 31/25 (2.24), a Sunderland win offers excellent value here, and is almost worth backing for the O'Neill factor alone.
