JD's Betting Blog: Advice on chasing losses and exclusive weekend tips

JD's Betting Blog: Advice on chasing losses and exclusive weekend tips

Latest Atletico Madrid-Espanyol Betting Preview: Why one of the sides will keep a clean sheet in the game Previous

JD explains why it's important not to chase your losses when attempting to turn a profit, plus he's expecting a tough season for Aston Villa in the Premier League

Last week proved fruitful in the betting markets with four out of five selections landing and a healthy profit earned.

Some of my selections were Metalist Kharviv over 1.5 team goals away to Dinamo Bucharest at 8/5 (2.60). On Saturday, both teams scored (advised at best price 6/5) early at Old Trafford in a 3-2 victory for Manchester United against Fulham.

Advice on "chasing" losses

It is important to retain discipline when involved in any sort of betting. If you have suffered consecutive losses, you may feel pressure and a desire to instantly recover that loss.

This is when you are most vulnerable and it is vital to retain control. For a majority of bettors, when they suffer a loss, the brain registers that as a mistake. As a human being, when we make a mistake we have a natural reaction to instantly rectify it.

It is like when we drop something by accident, we will almost certainly react instantly to pick it up. If we spill something at home, the reaction to clean it up will usually be instantaneous.

Be aware of this the next time you lose a bet and it should help you gain more control. You must treat a loss as part of the business, like  a tax on your overall profit. Stay patient and wait for your next opportunity.

Premier League relegation

Aston Villa are a team that look destined to struggle all season in the English Premier League and they are worth backing in the relegation market with Paddy Power at 12/5 (3.40). In truth, they have been in decline for a couple of seasons now and just about survived relegation back in May.

Paul Lambert has a huge job on his hands and has had to blood a number of young players and buy cheaply as owner Randy Lerner has tightened the purse strings. Their poor form has stretched back to last season and they have only recorded one victory in 14 league matches. If they dont pick up points soon, that price of 12/5 (3.40) with Paddy Power wont last long.

Weekend Tips

Looking ahead to the weekend, Paddy Power offer some excellent value in the football markets. In the English Championship, a talented Blackpool side have started very well and are one of the favourites for promotion.

They are a stand out 13/8 (2.62) in the "Draw no Bet" market with Paddy Power at Leicester City who tend to be overrated in the market. In La Liga, Deportivo La Coruna are back in the big time and have started brightly with a win and a credible draw at Valencia.

They host conquerors of Real Madrid last weekend, Getafe who don't travel well. Deportivo are 6/5 (2.20) with Paddy Power to win and they are worthy of support. The Galician club are traditionally strong at home and have recruited well in the summer.
