Betting special: Where will Rodgers' Reds finish this season?
With the Northern Irishman in the Anfield hotseat, Willie Duncan looks at how his first campaign in charge might unfold
After experiencing mixed fortunes during Season 2011/12, Liverpool will be under new management when the new English Premier League season gets underway this weekend.Brendan Rodgers has filled the Anfield hotseat vacated by Kenny Dalglish in the summer and there is a renewed optimism among some sections of the Liverpool faithful that the Northern Irishman can revive the club’s flagging league fortunes.

So, how will the men from Anfield fare under Rodgers’ stewardship this term?
Bookmaker William Hill has opened a special market on where Liverpool will finish during this campaign.
Another season of mediocrity seems likely to the odds compilers who offer a 4/7 (1.57) quote on the Reds ending the campaign between fifth and tenth place.
This would appear to represent good value because it seems that, despite the addition of Joe Allen from Swansea City and Fabio Borini from Roma, Rodgers’ squad still lacks the necessary depth and quality to break into the top four, priced up at 2/1 (3.0) with William Hill while the Reds are chalked up at 16/1 (17.0) to celebrate a first league title triumph since 1990.
The former Swansea City boss, though, can breathe enough life into his new charges that they should comfortably avoid the indignity of a bottom-half finish.
That's a prospect that is chalked up at 10/1 (11.0) with William Hill while the same firm offer a massive 80/1 (81.0) that the Reds are relegated – a bet that will surely only appeal to Merseyside football fans of an Everton persuasion.
Given time, Rodgers may prove to be a good appointment by the Liverpool board but it will take a while to build a squad capable of challenging in the upper echelons of the Premier League table and, subsequently, the Reds should be backed at 4/7 (1.57) to finish between fifth and tenth in the season ahead.
