thumbnail Hello,

With both teams seeing major changes over the summer period and high scoring pre-season results, Jim Knight can see more goals on Monday evening

The domestic season may not have officially kicked off yet thanks to the Olympics but the League Cup is already in full swing with many teams already in action over the weekend.

Monday and Tuesday see the remaining ties being played up and down the country and one of tonight’s ties sees Football League new boys Fleetwood Town host Championship side Nottingham Forest.

The hosts are understandably the outsiders at 9/4 (2.80) but some may be surprised to see Forest, who reside two leagues above their opposition, still available at odds-against, priced as they are at 11/10 (2.10) by Bet365, the draw is a 5/2 (3.50) shot.

Both teams have had summers of change, albeit for different reasons. Fleetwood's promotion from the conference sees them gearing up for life in League Two and their squad has changed dramatically since they sealed a place in the fourth tier back in April.

Fleetwood boss Micky Mellon has sold prolific forward Jamie Vardy to Leicester City and has seen several other key players move on too.

The replacements look to be of a good standard though, with the arrival of Jon Parkin – who has dropped down two divisions - from Cardiff City, proving just how serious Mellon is about attempting a second consecutive promotion. Parkin is a 6/1 (7.0) shot to open the scoring.

Forest have seen a change of ownership, management and wholesale shifts in the playing squad too, the loss of key defenders such as Chris Gunter, Luke Chambers and midfielders Gareth McCleary and Paul Anderson mean there are a lot of new faces at the City Ground. Ishmael Miller at 6/1 (7.0) and Dexter Blackstock at 11/2 (6.50) look the most likely source of goals for the visitors.

Backing Fleetwood on the double chance could appeal in theory but the 4/6 (1.67) on offer is not inspiring. Instead opting for over 2.5 goals at 4/5 (1.80) with Bet365 could prove the best option.

New Forest boss Sean O'Driscoll will want to see his side replicate the form which saw them score three times against Aston Villa and two against rivals Notts County earlier this month, but their somewhat shaky new defensive line has also leaked five goals in three games.

Fleetwood's fortunes have been much the same, with a 3-3 draw against Tranmere their latest pre-season exploit, after a 3-1 loss to Oldham.

Without a lot of form to read into for a match result bet and uncertainty over start line ups for first and anytime scorer markets, backing a high scoring game looks to be the best option between these two much-changed teams. Cup games, especially in the early rounds are suited to small stakes but 4/5 (1.80) looks a solid price worthy of investment.
