One of football's worst kept secrets is out of the bag with the news of Fabio Capello's impending retirement following Euro 2012. Don Fabio has said he wants to "enjoy my life as a pensioner" although a cynic would say he has plenty of experience of that considering his reliance on England's old guard during his tenure in charge.

The FA have made it clear that Capello's successor should be British and preferably English. Provided Capello sees out the remainder of his contract England will have been coached by foreign managers for almost an entire decade barring Steve McClaren's disastrous stint in 2006-07.

So who are the candidates to step into Capello's shoes in two years time? We take a look at the leading contenders according to the bookmakers.

Harry Redknapp
Odds. 3.25
During the World Cup Redknapp looked dismayed at England's blundering performance against Germany and is as patriotic as they come. Redknapp would be popular with players, including his nephew Frank Lampard. Lacks international experience but his stock is high after turning Tottenham Hotspur from relegation candidates into Champions League contenders. He'd be welcomed by the press, and he would no longer be called a wheeler dealer, and would probably be a hit with the public. Then again the same things were said about Kevin Keegan...

Stuart Pearce
Odds: 5.50
'Psycho' has been Capello's right hand man and must have learned something. Let's hope it's not just Italian and how to get elbowed in the ribs by his manager. Has done a reasonable job with the Under 21s, guiding them to the European Championship final last year, where they were promptly thumped by...Germany. Pearce's club management career petered out at Manchester City so will have to convince many he is up to managing his country.

Roy Hodgson
Odds: 8.00
Has been a contender before and knows the international game well having managed Switzerland and Finland to considerable success. Considering he spent most of his career dotted around the globe it's easy to forget that Hodgson is in fact English. The veteran coach has a major job on his hands at Liverpool but if he turns the Reds into title contenders he would surely be the natural choice for the FA.

Martin O'Neill
Odds: 8.00
Passed over when Steve McClaren got the job for apparently not impressing in the interview. Another FA masterstroke. Currently without a job after leaving Aston Villa before the season started, O'Neill will unlikely be still unemployed by the time 2012 rolls around.  For motivation and getting the best out of his players look no further.

David Beckham
Odds: 10.0
Certainly looked the part on the sideline clad in his England blazer in South Africa. Has hinted he's not interested in coaching but surely Becks wouldn't turn down his country. Has been touted as a possible assistant to whoever manages England next.

Sam Allardyce
Odds: 11.0
Big Sam was given the big brush off when he applied for the post to succeed Sven Goran Eriksson in 2006. He gave the FA a DVD of his plans which was considered far too radical for the conservative association. Allardyce's stock took a hit at Newcastle United but has bounced back at Blackburn Rovers. A long shot.

Steve Bruce
Odds: 17.0
As a player Bruce earned only a single England B cap and was scandalously overlooked for the senior team during his successful years at Manchester United. Hopped from club to club in his early managerial career before settling down at Birmingham City, Wigan Athletic and now Sunderland. Enjoys a fine reputation for inspiring player loyalty and has helped forward Darren Bent find a place in the England line-up. Whether that is good enough to manage his country is another story though.

Steve McClaren
Odds: 21.0
Turned his reputation around in Holland, winning the Eredivisie with Twente and now has a good job in Germany with Wolfsburg. For England fans he will forever be the 'wolly with a brolly'. Harsh, but given his record in charge of the Three Lions, fair. If this did happen it would be a greater comeback than Elvis Presley.

Alan Shearer
Odds: 21.0
Currently a fixture on the sofa giving (alleged) analysis, Shearer failed to inspire his beloved Newcastle United from dropping out of the Premier League in 2008-09 during his brief managerial career. In fairness that is a poisoned chalice so perhaps he would fit in nicely with another infamous job which has only ever yielded one major trophy in its entire history.
