World & European Champions Spain Red Hot Favourites To Beat Liechtenstein At 1/100
La Furia Roja are expected to maintain their unbeaten run against the Euro 2012 minnows...
By Patrick Reilly
The world and European champions begin their continental defence in Vaduz and are redder favourites than even their famous La Roja shirts. In simple terms, a £100 stake at odds of 1.01 will win you £1 profit.
By contrast a shock Liechtenstein win is priced at 41.0 and the draw at 17.0. Along with being favourites for this match, the Euro 2008 winners are 5.0 to retain their crown in two years time. They will need to make history though as no team has won back-to-back European Championship titles since the tournament began in 1960.
La Furia Roja travel to Liechtenstein eager to extend their unbeaten record to 17 games. Not since 2006 have Spain been defeated in a UEFA European Championship game. They were last beaten 3-2 by Northern Ireland in September 2006.
Liechtenstein and Spain have met on four previous occasions, with the world champions leading 13-0 on aggregate. In both of the games played in Liechtenstein the favourites ran out 2-0 winners.
* Spain to win 2-0 - 7.50
The minnows can take some heart from the knowledge that they kept Spain quiet for 76 minutes when the teams last met in 2007. An early David Villa double earned the three points for the eventual Euro 2008 winners. Villa also missed a late penalty in the same game during which Pepe Reina got a rare start in goal.
Vicente del Bosque is treating the game very seriously and doesn't expect the hosts to roll over.
"Success in the World Cup won't be harmful for the future; on the contrary, as world champions we must do our best in every game. Liechtenstein are not going to make things easy," said the coach.
His equivalent Hans-Peter Zaugg has promoted players from the U-21 squad and told the media that "it is good we have hungry players".
Hungry or not, Liechtenstein will need a miracle to get anything from the game, although it may not be a hiding based on previous form.
Match Odds: Liechtenstein 41.0, Draw 17.0, Spain 1.01
Both teams to score - 4.33 (Liechtenstein have never scored against Spain)
2 or 3 goals in game - 2.87
Over 3 goals - 1.44
