Italy's most highly rated player is Alberto Gilardino, positioned at number 46 in the Castrol Rankings. Despite a lacklustre season on the Serie A front, the Italian international striker comes in far higher than any of his esteemed colleagues. In fact, the next two Italians to chart are goalkeepers Emiliano Viviano, of Bologna, and Napoli's Morgan De Sanctis. For a current, regular, Italy international, one has to go down to 71st place, where the current Serie A leading marksman, Antonio Di Natale, lies.

Chiellini hands down. The main reason Juventus are not in worse shape. Along with Vidic, he's the best defender around. Watch him; he doesn't have a bad game.

seb italy

its a shame that italy is at the point it currently is in without one big name star player currently in peak form or at the top of their game. de rossi, ambro, borriello, balotelli, totti, nesta, are all having good seasons, but none are close to the top talent currently around. hopefully italy produce something or someone soon.

Romanista89 Rome

Players that also should be in contention for this title are Sorrentino from Chievo and Maccarone from Siena. Both teams would surely be down and out without the presence of these players. For example, Christmas of last season, Chievo are bottom of the league and looked a certainty to go down, they go on an impressive unbeaten run that rescues them. How many of those games could so easily have been defeats if it wasnt for Sorrentino. The 0-0 game against Roma at the Olimpico is a shining example
