Van Basten greeted by 4,000 fans for first Heerenveen training session
The former Ajax and Netherlands coach has conducted his first pre-season preparations with his new club under the enthusiastic eyes of thousands of supporters
Marco van Basten got off to a heart-warming start with Heerenveen SC as he was greeted by more than 4,000 fans for his first training session with the Eredivise outfit.
The former AC Milan striker was named as Ron Jans' successor at the helm of the Frisian outfit back in February, and he officially took the reins of the club, who finished in fifth place last season, on Saturday.
Three players were missing from the squad for the opening pre-season session, with highly-rated Filip Djuricic on international duty with the Under-19 Serbian team, plus Luciano Narsingh and Oussama Assaidi - who are both believed to be set to leave the club this summer amid interest from PSV and Galatasaray respectively.
Van Basten, who had been without a job since 2009, has managed 55 victories in the 84 matches he has overseen as a manger with both Ajax and the Netherlands.
