Former France captain Marcel Desailly: I want Portugal to win Euro 2012

The retired Ghanaian-born French player says he does not want Spain to retain the prestigious continental title and would love to see it transferred to the Portuguese
Former France captain Marcel Desailly has tipped Portugal to win the 2012 European Championship that is ongoing in Ukraine and Poland.

The Seleccao are preparing for their semi-final clash against Spain on June 27 after beating the Czech Republic 1-0 in the quarter-final.

Desailly told Liquidsportsghana that this could be Portugal’s chance to win the cup despite the presence of other heavyweights, particularly Spain.

“I like Portugal,” the 2000 European champion said. “I don’t want Spain to win the cup any more because I want to share the victory; we need to have other faces. I like Portugal definitely.”

Cristiano Ronaldo has been immense for Portugal and the Real Madrid player’s three goals – making him one of the four top scorers in the tournament so far - have helped fire coach Paulo Bento’s side to the last four.

Portugal will now face defending champions Spain on Wednesday for a final place while Germany slug it out with Italy the day after.
