Netherlands to make decision on Van Marwijk's future before July 6
The Oranje national team coach has a contract with the 2010 World Cup finalist for four more years, but he could be axed in the next few weeks after a performance evaluation
The Dutch Football Association (KNVB) will make a decision on the future of national team coach Bert van Marwijk in the next two weeks. The former Feyenoord and Borussia Dortmund boss has a contract with the KNVB until after Euro 2016, but the 60-year-old has come under scrutiny following Netherlands' disastrous European Championship campaign this summer.
Van Marwijk and the KNVB had already agreed on evaluating the coach's position after Euro 2012 at the time of his contract extension, and both parties will meet for talks before July 6.
"Bert van Marwijk deserves a fair evaluation," KNVB director Bert van Oostveen said to Algemeen Dagblad. "We will sit down to discuss matters shortly. We have to meet before the summer break. I'm going away on holiday on July 6, so we'll have to get this out of the way before then."
Van Oostveen then went on to discuss Oranje's fitness levels at Euro 2012, and expressed his surprise with the Dutch's relatively poor physical condition.
"I would really like to know why the other teams were on a higher fitness level. Not just as a director, but also as a football enthusiast. The difference with the other teams was clear to see. That has really surprised me."
Players such as Wesley Sneijder and Rafael van der Vaart have already backed Van Marwijk to remain in charge of Oranje, despite the team's group-stage exit at Euro 2012.
