Eight teams have advanced to the quarter-finals of what has been an enthralling tournament so far and we take a look at the best in show according to our ratings index

There has been no shortage of intriguing moments at the 2012 European Championship after an exhilarating group stage which did not produce a single goalless draw.

Defending champions Spain won their group despite some anxious moments while Euro 2008 runners-up Germany finished the round with a perfect record ... in the Group of Death no less.

Czech Republic surprised many by winning their section despite a horror start, and England proved their naysayers wrong by topping Group D ahead of a France side who had been in fine form pre-tournament.

Now that the dust has settled in the opening round of the tournament, we take a closer look at the top 20 players based on our ratings index who have featured in at least 40 per cent of their country's games in the tournament.

GOLDEN GOMEZ?
6/4 Mario Gomez is the 6/4 favourite to be the top goalscorer at Euro 2012 with William Hill
Denmark have two players in the top five despite failing to qualify for the knockout round after losses to Portugal and Germany.

Pepe and Mats Hummels have been solid in defence while midfield metronomes Xavi and Andrea Pirlo take their place near the top of the pile.

Andriy Shevchenko and Zlatan Ibrahimovic grace the top 10 even though their magic wasn't enough to seal a berth in the last eight.

Franck Ribery is the only Frenchman to make the top 20 index while there are no English players at all despite the Three Lions winning their group.

Mario Gomez, who leads the tournament's scoring charts with three goals takes 12th spot and Luka Modric is Croatia's sole representative.

Denmark's Stephan Andersen is the only goalkeeper to make the list while 13 midfielders make the top 20.

Goal.com has provided player ratings for every match in the group stage and will continue to do so until the tournament ends on July 1.
