Felix Magath urges Low to start creative players against Greece

Felix Magath urges Low to start creative players against Greece

The Wolfsburg coach has backed players like Klose, Schurrle and Gotze to come in from the cold to out-fox a well-marshalled Greek defence on Friday

Felix Magath would like to see Germany play with a lot more creativity in their Euro 2012 quarter-final clash with Greece on Friday in Gdansk.

The Wolfsburg coach has urged Bundestrainer Joachim Low to change his tactics as he fears the Greeks will defend deep and offer a lot more resistance than any of die Mannschaft's Group B opponents.

He wrote in his column for Welt.de: "If the team is not focused and disciplined, I would say that the next game in the quarter-finals against Greece will be the most difficult for the team yet in this tournament.

"I can promise that the Greeks will sit very deep and defend on Friday in Gdansk, maybe even deeper than they usually sit.

"If there is anything that they learned from [former coach] Otto Rehhagel, it is how to defend. They are excellent at that to this day.

"The organisation and aggression are excellent and the statistics prove it. They have only conceded five goals in their 10 qualifying matches. That makes them very difficult opponents. Their counterattacks are also very effective and they almost always score at least a goal."

If he had his way, Magath would set his side out to go on attacking runs and play killer balls through the defence, and would also start certain players who have sat on the bench for the first three games this summer.

"Against such a defensive opponent Germany do not need a 'double six' with Sami Khedira and Bastian Schweinsteiger, and no target man like Mario Gomez, even though he is world class," he added.

"[What is] Necessary is strong dribbling, attackers and midfielders who can pass, players like Mesut Ozil who can play in tight spaces and can make the most of few situations. We have players like that in our squad, who so far have been on the bench; Miroslav Klose, Andre Schurrle or Mario Gotze.

"The game will be won on the ground. The Greek central defenders are some of the strongest in the air in the tournament and we will not have a chance with crosses."

Magath did stress that if Low were to take his advice, then it should be for this one game only and that they should revert back to their group-stage mentality if they advance past the Greeks.

"Changes like that are not without risk, though," he continued. "The rhythm can be disrupted. One thing is clear, should we reach the semi-final we should revert back to the successful line-up from the group stages.

"It seems like a paradox, but the games from the semi-final onwards will be easier for the team, at least as far as tactics are concerned."

Die Mannschaft's game against Fernando Santos' side kicks off at 20:45CET on Friday.
