I did not show I was good enough to play for Real Madrid, admits Netherlands right-back Van der Wiel
The 24-year-old Ajax ace was hoping to sell himself to the Liga giants, but freely admits that he failed to live up to his billing as one of Europe's best young defenders
Netherlands right-back Gregory van der Wiel has lamented his failure to prove himself worthy of a move to Real Madrid during Euro 2012.The Ajax ace was heavily linked with Los Blancos before the tournament began, but he feels that he has done his cause no favours at all with three lacklustre showings for Oranje.
"I have no definite news about Real Madrid," Van der Wiel is quoted as saying by MARCA. "They could be looking for a right-back, but I have not played well enough to prove I can play there [for them].
"I can do much better and that's frustrating for me. We'll see what happens in a few weeks and which clubs are interested, but for now I cannot be thinking about Real Madrid."
The 24-year-old full-back, who has been capped 35 times by his country, has also previously expressed his interest in joining Champions League winners Chelsea.
