Bookmakers agree to pay €100,000 fine for Denmark striker Bendtner
The Arsenal man was handed a one-match suspension after he lifted his shirt to reveal the 'lucky' underwear sponsored by the betting firm in his country's match against Portugal
Bookmakers, Paddy Power have agreed to pay the €100,000 fine handed to Niklas Bendtner by Uefa following the Denmark striker's celebrations against Portugal earlier in the Euro 2012 tournament.Bendtner revealed the 'Paddy Power' logo across his green underpants as he lifted his shirt to celebrate scoring his country's equaliser in the Group B match.
Along with the fine, a one-match ban was given to the 24-year-old, which will rule him out of Denmark's opening 2014 World Cup qualifier unless he is successful in his appeal.
In retaliation to the Uefa punishment, the betting company issued a statement revealing that they will pay the fine for the Arsenal man, labelling the European governing body as "hysterical and deeply cynical."
A recent statement posted on Twitter by the company read: "Inspired by your Twitter feedback, we have agreed to pay the barmy €100k fine that #Uefa dished out [to] Nicklas Bendtner."
Amongst a number of tweets seemingly mocking Uefa, the company continued to express their feelings towards the organisation: "Nicklas Bendtner shouldn't suffer because of #Uefa's double standards, & penalised for wearing his lucky pants, which was just a bit of fun."
Paddy Power later launched the hashtag 'POWERPANTS' and revealed that they would send out 3,000 pairs of the incriminating underwear to their social media followers.
"#POWERPANTS: today we are posting 3,000 pairs of Lucky Pants to those who asked for them on our Facebook page. Wear them in solidarity with Nicklas."
