Spain and Italy through to Euro 2012 knockout stages
The European and world champions survived a major scare, but still go through at the top of the group, while the Azzurri finished second after securing a 2-0 victory over Ireland
Spain and Italy are through to the quarter-finals of Euro 2012 after winning their respective matches in Group C.An Antonio Cassano header following a corner from Andrea Pirlo and a late Mario Balotelli strike earned Italy three precious points against Republic of Ireland and the qualification for the knockout stages after the Azzurri had entered their final match in third place in the group.
Spain had to wait until the final minutes of their match against Croatia, but a goal from Jesus Navas on 88 minutes assured that La Roja finish at the top of the group.
