Xavi insists the Spain camp is in buoyant mood despite criticism over Italy draw
Las Rojas' midfielder insists they are feeling confident and will go for the win against Croatia on Monday despite only needing a draw to qualify for the quarter-final
Spain midfielder Xavi is confident Vicente Del Bosque’s side can defend their European crown and win Euro 2012, insisting spirits are high at their camp in Gniewino.Spain have four points from their first two group games after drawing with Italy and demolishing the Republic of Ireland 4-0 on Thursday.
Las Rojas face Croatia on Monday as they bid to defend their Euro 2008 win, and the influential midfield maestro says the team is buoyant ahead of their final group game.
"We really want to do something great, despite the discussions after the draw with Italy, I am optimistic and that's what the environment is in the locker room," he told reporters.
"We will not go for the draw because we can not play that way, we only know to keep the ball and take charge of the game."
Regarding the controversy of the 'false nine' position filled by Cesc Fabregas against Italy, Xavi said he is "very confident in Fernando Torres" and welcomed the comments of Luis Aragones, who said Spain must play with a striker.
"Luis has the right to say whatever he wants, is one of the keys to everything that is happening here and the good we have done," Xavi added.
The talented passer also refuted suggestions that he has fallen out with goalkeeper and captain Iker Casillas.
"Iker is my partner, we sleep next door and above it all, is our friendship," said the Catalan player.
