Carroll: Fightback against Sweden shows England's team spirit

The Liverpool striker was thrilled to get on the scoresheet for his country and also has praise for his team-mates after they picked up their first win of Euro 2012

Andy Carroll says England's victory over Sweden proves how good the team spirit is within the squad after coming from 2-1 down to win 3-2 on Friday.

Carroll rewarded Roy Hodgson's decision to start him in Kiev by opening the scoring for the Three Lions with a towering header, only for an own goal from Glen Johnson and a Olof Melberg goal to swing the match in Sweden's favour early in the second half.

That prompted Hodgson to introduce Theo Walcott into the action, and it proved a masterstroke as he scored and provided the cross for Danny Welbeck's well taken winner to award England their first tournament victory against the Swedes.

"It's a great feeling," he told Sky Sports. "It was a great ball in by Stevie [Gerrard], I got in the middle of two defenders and put it away.

"I think we felt a little bit comfortable. Obviously, I gave a foul away and they got a goal from that, and it put us on the back foot.

"We had to work hard to win the game. Just to fight back shows the team spirit and we are all sticking together. We got the two goals we needed."

The three points mean England now only need draw against the tournament co-hosts to ensure their place in the last eight.
